Test Scores

A GMAT or GRE score from the past five years is required for admission. GMAT/GRE Waivers are available for some applicants who meet our waiver requirements. You may submit an unofficial score with your application, but an official score is required by the time you start classes.

Additionally, we prefer to know if you have taken the tests multiple times. For us, this shows effort and perseverance.

The institution codes for MBA@Rice are:

GRE: 2595
GMAT: 3WS-WD-52

As part of our response to COVID-19, applicants for July and October 2020 cohorts can provide ACT or SAT scores instead of the GMAT or GRE. This is in addition to the standardized test waiver exceptions that we offer on a case-by-case basis. Please contact your admissions counselor for more information.

Transcripts

Official academic records of all previously attended colleges or universities must be submitted directly from the colleges or universities to the Office of Graduate Admission Processing.

Transcripts may be sent electronically by email to Application Processing Services or by mail to:

Please note: To be considered an official transcript, the transcript must be sent directly from your institution(s) or through an electronic transcript vendor retained by that institution. Transcripts submitted by enrolled or prospective students are considered unofficial documents, even if they are in a sealed envelope provided to you by the issuing university.

Professional Work History

You must submit a current resume as part of your application.

Essays

One essay is required to apply. Please choose from one of the two options below. A second essay is optional.

Your essays serve as some of the most interesting and enlightening sections of the Rice MBA application. A well-composed essay can add depth and personality to your application and prove to the admissions committee that you add something unique to the Rice family.

Use your essay to pull together your story. Every person has a story that is unique and meaningful to them - and no matter how random your story may seem, there is a reason for all of the pieces. Use the essay to pull those pieces together into a story that can only be written by you, about YOU.

Essay 1

Rice is a community of curious thinkers, passionate dreamers and energetic doers who believe that improving the world demands more than bold thought and brave action. It takes unconventional wisdom. What does unconventional wisdom mean to you?

Essay 2

In the Rice MBA classroom, you will encounter a diverse and inclusive environment. What will you bring to the classroom that is uniquely you?

Optional Essay

If you have any additional information for the admissions committee or if you wish to clarify any aspect of your application (including breaks in employment, your choice of recommendation providers, your past academic performance, etc.), you may submit an additional, optional essay. (Page Limit: One page, bullet points allowed)

Letters of Recommendation

One of the following is required:

  • A professional recommendation from a current direct supervisor
  • Two recommendations from former supervisors

Recommenders will submit their recommendations themselves through our online portal.

Application Fee

For the remainder of 2020, the current application fee of $200 is being waived for all applicants.
